影片背景設(shè)在朝鮮時代，帶領(lǐng)觀眾來到戰(zhàn)爭烽火肆虐后的混沌年代，隨著一對反目成仇的兒時玩伴展開一段扣人心弦的旅程。千永(Cheon-yeong) 是武藝高強的奴隸，竭力掙脫為人奴仆的不公桎梏，宗烈(Jong-ryeo) 則是千永的主人，來自朝鮮最有影響力的軍武世家。姜棟元飾演身懷高超劍術(shù)的平民千永，拚命扭轉(zhuǎn)生而為奴的宿命。樸正民飾演朝鮮赫赫有名軍武世家之后的宗烈，他收留千永，而后加入皇軍，成為當(dāng)朝國王宣祖的左膀右臂。車勝元飾演為了自保而背棄子民的君主宣祖，金新綠飾演凡東 (Beom-dong)，陳善奎飾演出身高貴并率領(lǐng)人民義勇軍的將軍飾演金慈領(lǐng) (Kim Ja-ryeong)，鄭星一則飾演殘暴的日軍先鋒劍心 (Kenshin)。
